SANDCARVING
|
Sandcarving is a method used to engrave or etch glass, crystal glass, marble, stone and generally any hard non-porous and even some porous substrates. While the sandcarving method is not
new, it is growing in popularity due to the diverse number of materials that are able to be sandcarved, the high quality of the etch achieved and the fact that many materials can be deep etched and multi-stage etched,
which allows the sandcarving artist to etch elements of a design at differing depths providing a unique three-dimensional appearance.
Sandcarving on glass and other materials no longer utilizes "sand" as the cutting material because silica-based sand is environmentally hazardous to both the user and the environment in general and sand breaks down very
quickly into dust and becomes unusable. Today, sandcarving is generally done with either aluminum oxide or silicon carbide, neither of which poses the same environmental hazards as silica-based material and is a more
suitable cutting material because it maintains its ability to cut much longer.
Sandcarving can be used to create simple etched seasonal ornaments to elaborate
wall panels, doors, and unique pieces that could be classified as museum-quality works of art. Both the hobbyist and the professional
can produce stunning items that will wow your friends and clients.
